West Ashley

West of the Ashley River is the cleverly named West Ashley, seen as the birthplace of Charleston. The first permanent settlement happened at Albemarle Point, currently known as Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, in 1670, and this area has remained within the Charleston city limits since then and is not a self-governed town. West Ashley's first neighborhoods were developed in the 1950s, and the neighborhood's growth increased after I-526 opened as an unnamed highway in 1982. The beauty comes from the waterfront marshes and the ancient moss-draped oak trees. A fun fact about the area is that the iconic rowboat scene from "The Notebook" was filmed in Magnolia Plantation in the Audobon Swamp Garden.
